Flu vaccination in Spain: Why it is so important now!
Many can hear the word vaccination anymore and we know that many are just tired of it. We can more than understand that. Nevertheless, especially this season, the flu vaccination is particularly important for those over 60 years, because the hygiene measures during the Corona period makes the immune system less trained.
As a rule, our immune system has to fight off viruses and bacteria every day, so there is a large amount of defense cells. In the Corona pandemic, however, contacts were reduced and the body was exposed to fewer viruses and bacteria. This led to a weakened defense overall. Thus, most people’s immune systems are currently not as well prepared for influenza as they used to be.
Flu vaccination can help – who should protect themselves?
Especially people over 60, all persons with increased health risk due to an underlying disease and also children from 6 months of age, who are at increased risk due to a chronic disease, should be vaccinated against influenza according to the recommendation of the STIKO. The recommendation also applies to people in nursing homes or homes for the elderly, pregnant women, medical personnel, and people who work in the food service or retail industries or live at home with elderly family members.
What else can you do?
Especially during the flu season, the generally known hygiene measures are also an effective prophylaxis. However, if you do get caught, the only thing you can do is rest, rest and rest again. Usually the disease begins suddenly with fever over 38 degrees, cough, headache, sore throat, and aching limbs, as well as fatigue and exhaustion.
How long does flu last?
It depends on the pathogen and the state of the immune system. If you have symptoms, you are usually sick with flu for one to two weeks. In individual cases, however, it may take longer than 14 days.
Since influenza viruses are highly contagious and there have currently been severe cases, we recommend that at-risk groups be vaccinated quickly.
