The pneumologist (also pulmonology) deals with the prophylaxis, diagnosis and conservative therapy of diseases of the lungs, bronchi and pleura. He also takes care of the aftercare of chronic diseases such as asthma or bronchitis. In contrast to the surgical discipline, thoracic surgery, in which surgical interventions are carried out on the lungs and the entire chest, the lung specialist uses only conservative forms of treatment.

His area of responsibility includes the treatment of asthmatic diseases, acute and chronic bronchitis, COPD, pleura diseases and cystic fibrosis. Patients who suffer from sleep apnea or who are tormented by allergies can also turn to a pulmonologist.
